Ansel Adams was born February 20, 1902 and died April 22, 1984. Ansel was an American photographer and environmentalist that is very popular for his work. he works most known are his black and white landscape photographs of the American West, especially Yosemite National Park (click link to see). Adams developed the zone system as a way to determine the proper exposure and contrast, with the help of Fred Archer. Ansel was a hyperactive child prone to sickness and hypochondria. He grew up with surroundings such as the Golden Gate and Marin Headlands, providing great areas to play. He was very interested in the outside world starting at a younger age, he was always picking up bugs and showing friends/ family. At 4 years old Ansel was tossed face first into his garden during the after shock of the San Francisco earthquake. In 1927, Adams produced hi8s first portfolio, Pramelian Prints Of The High Sierras, and from there on his photo career grew. In the course of his 60 years of photography, the 1930s were a more productive and experimental time. Adams expanded his works, focusing on detailed close ups and large forms from mountains to factories. Adams did not work with just black and white, he also experimented with color. His subjects that he shot in color ranged from portraits to landscape to architecture.
